Although HIV constantly replicates from the moment of infection, it is a long time before symptoms of illness surface. Even without treatment, this period can be as much as 10 years. One reason for the delay between infection and illness is that the immune system is, for a time, successfully fighting the virus. Left untreated, however, HIV replication will eventually overwhelm a person's immune system.
