Women Women often do not recognize their risk for HIV infection. However, the reality is that more women are being infected with HIV today than ever before. In fact, women comprise about 42% of HIV positive adults worldwide. Most women contract the virus either through drug-use or by having sex with an HIV-infected man. In heterosexual relationships, women and teenage girls are far more vulnerable than their partners for contracting HIV as a result of sexual activity.
